Class History - A Flashback
by  Rose Clemente

How fast time flies! We could hardly believe that soon we would bid goodbye to our Alma Mater. But could we forget those moments when we nearly cracked our brains in locating sine and cosine solving every side of an equation or describing the glory that was Greece and the grandeur that was Rome? Must we forget those moments when we shared common jokes and laughters?

I feel as if 1975 was only yesterday when we entered the portals of Tabaco National High School - fresh, eager and ready to face every challenge that might pave our way. We were then divided into 10 sections. After getting acquainted with each other, we organized the Freshman Barangay. Eula Mae Flores was elected Captain under the advisorship of Mrs. Amelia Base. It was October when Eula Mae Flores, Lirerose Melgar and Sherman Biniza were selected delegates to the Cagsawa Jamboree.

Before we knew it, it was January 1976. We celebrated the annual fete. Maryleth Cruel was the pride of the freshmen during this affair. It was indeed an enjoyable experience because it helped in moulding our real selves. The Recognition Day followed wherein worthy students received the awards they had worked for. Roselda Bombales, Lirerose Melgar and Eula Mae Flores copped the first place; Zosimo Bonaobra III, Maryleth Cruel and Rosario Clemente were the second and Joe; Paguio, the lone holder of the third place.

We parted ways not for good but to have a time off from books and homeworks. We made the most of that time off. The short respite transformed us into more ambitious and worthy students ready to add another interesting chapter in our life.

Days passed like a water in a stream. We found ourselves no longer freshmen but sophies. This time it was Gregorio Luis Contacto III who was elected Captain under the guidance of Mrs. Ruthie Benosa. We found every second... every minute very meaningful and exciting. It was the time when we discovered how it is to be a high school student.

As usual we celebrated the traditional Tabaco National High School Week. We participated in field demonstrations and parlor games. For the second time, Maryleth Cruel proved that she has the goddess beauty, when she became Miss Sophomore.

A feather was added to our cap when Joel Paguio won third prize in the Regional Poster Making Contest sponsored by the Philippine Motor Association.

Within a wink of an eye, the Senioe Recognition Day came, Roselda Bombales, Lirerose Melgar and Eula Mae Flores got the first, second and third places respectively. This time Roselda Bombales and Gregorio Luis Contacto III were chosen as model students of the year.

Eventhough how hard it was to say goodbye, we had to. The two month vacation that followed seemed too long to endure. We missed each other's company.

As time went on, experiences had taught us how to be more responsible and mature. We formed the Junior Barangay and it was Gregorio Luis Contacto III who stood as Captain with Mrs. Remedios Clavecillas as the adviser. We buried ourselves in books to meet the expectations of our parents and teachers not knowing that 1977 was nearly ending.

By September, a workshop on the Future Farmers of the Philippines and Future Agricultural Homemakers of the Philippines was held in Catanduanes. Lirerose Melgar, Sherman Biniza, Orlando Lew Velasco and Eula Mae Flores were the school representatives.

When October came, five of our classmates were chosen delegates to a convention and a camping, four of whom were sent to Baguio City to attend the CMLI National Convention. They were Roselda Bombales, Orlando Lew Velasco, Lirerose Melgar and Eula Mae Flores. The other one was Ninez Bilasano who attended the Regional Youth Science Camp in Roca Baluarte.

In spite of some academic problems, we stood as one in maintaining the high standards of the school. We always brought home the bacon. Roselda Bombales bagged three major prizes in the Regional Press Conference while Rosario Clemente won eight place in essay writing (Filipino) on the same event. Their winning nearly made the Tabaco National High School champion in that said event. To top it all, Roselda Bombales ran away with the first place in feature writing, during the National Secondary Schools Press Conference held here in Tabaco National High School.

In scouting, Lirerose Melgar and Maryleth Cruel went to Cebu to attend the National Jamboree while Sherman Biniza, Jesus Bongalon, Jovito Cuya, Darius Imperial, Nestor Morasa, Constantino Bo, Jr., Claudio Corral, Jr., Domeciano Cruza represented Tabaco National High School in Isabela.

After a short pause, we returned in January. We looked forward to the forthcoming Junior-Senior Prom. Some were nervous with excitement over their first dance. The most awaited night came... an event which will remain forever in our hearts.

We celebrated the Tabaco National High School Week. It was more colorful and happier than before. This time it was Jocelyn Casin who became Miss Junior.

The climax was the Recognition Day. Our toil was rewarded. Thise who belonged to the Magic Ten were: Roselda Bombales, Lirerose Melgar, Zosimo Bonaobra III, Ninez Bilasano, Joel Paguio, Gregorio Luis Contacto III, Cristy Belmes, Rosario Clemente.

Then June of 1978 came. We were already addressed Seniors in capital S. We were in a wider battlefield with greater challenges and more responsibilities in our shoulders. We organized our Senior Barangay. Orlando Lew Velasco was the Barangay Captain and Miss Elena Balcueva was our adviser. Files of problems, books and homeworks made us unaware of the time until it was already mid-year. We proved for the last time our love to our Alma Mater as we continued on carving our names in the pages of our Alma Mater's Book of History. Rafael Kallos received a trophy for winning in an essay writing contest sponsored by the Ministry of Public Information. It was followed by Roselda Bombales and Lito Macaraig, who both won first place in the division essay writing contest sponsored by the Ministry of Education and Culture and the Central Bank of the Philippines. While Uzziel Malagueno and Joel Paguio won in the slogan and poster making contest sponsored by the Legazpi Junior Jaycees an

In October and November, several were sent as delegates to conferences. Lirerose Melgar, Gregorio Luis Contacto III and Ninez Bilasano were the delegates to the CMLI National Convention in Baguio City. Roselda Bombales, Rosario Clemente attended the Regional Press Conference ion Batangas City. Luckily Roselda Bombales won in news and editorial writing.

It was also during these months when the Division Science Fair and Quiz was held in our school. Some of our classmates won in this affair. They were Lirerose Melgar and Zosimo Bonaobra III second in the science quiz; Allan Rocha and Uzziel Malagueno, third in the math quiz; Cristy Belmes, first in the investigatory project; Roselda Bombales, second in the essay writing and Joel Paguio , first in the poster making contest.

Books and notebooks were temporarily shelved off during the two week Christmas vacation to enjoy the season.

The end of 1978 did not mean that happenings were over. In the early part of 1979, Roselda Bombales won in the newswriting contest when she was sent as delegate to the National Press Conference in San Jose, Antique. Sherman Biniza, Jovito Cuya, Jesus Bongalon, Orlando Lew Velasco were the representatives for the Final Board Review for the Scout Citizens Award in Samar. And Orlando Lew Velasco attended the National Scout Youth Forum in Los Banos, Laguna.

Joel Paguio winning the second place in the National Poster Making Contest sponsored by the Philippine Motor Association wasn't at all news to us because we know that he would really bag it and he did.

As, Seniors we never turned our backs when we heard criticisms and feedbacks. We humbly received and let them serve as guide posts as we tackled our work. What we did was strive harder and let time give the verdict. God bestowed to us one of the biggest surprises this year and that was when we won in the tactical inspection with an over-all grade of 88.88%, first in the first district of Albay and third in the Division of Albay. The Corps of cadets was composed of Cdt. Col. Gregorio Luis Contacto III, Corp. Commander; Cdt. Lt. Col. Orlando Lew Velasco, Corp Ex-O; Cdt. Lt. Col. Marciano Rosario III, GI-Adjutant; Cdt. Lt. Col. Darius Imperial, G2 Intelligence Officer; Cdt. Lt. Col. Joel Paguio, G3 Training Officer; Cdt. Lt. Col.Claudio Corral, Jr., G4 Logistic Officer; Cdt. Lt. Col. Sherman Biniza, 1st Bn Cmdr and Cdtte. Lt. Col. Lirerose Melgar, 2nd Bn Cmdr, among others. The commandants were the late Mr. Bobby Borrero and PB 2 Lt. Angeles Bas, Jr. Yes, we made history

We celebrated the annual Tabaco National High School Week. It was Maryleth Cruel who became Miss Tabaco National High School and Marilou Balaoro, Miss Senior. As part of the celebration we had the student take over. For two days, teachers bequeathed their responsibilities to the student teachers. Cristy Belmes was the teacher in Physics, Rafael Kallos, Social Studies; Natividad Cidro and Lirerose Melgar, Homemaking Arts; Roselda Bombales, English; Agnes Rana, Literature; Alfredo Escoto, Trigonometry; Allan Rocha, Eufrecina Bognalbal, and Uzziel Malagueno, Math; Melinda Berces, Music and Eula Mae Flores, Health. Maryleth Cruel became the guidance counselor while Orlando Lew Velasco acted as principal. Still this month was made significant when Elmer Jesalva became an interscholastic player.

Our last three-month stay in Tabaco National High School was so fruitful. Graduation was not far behind for we would soon receive the guarantee - that we can now face life by ourselves. We can now make use of of those past experiences, those acquired knowledge as instruments to a greater success.
